Under review: The Braves' call on Contreras

William Contreras and Sean Murphy changed teams in the same 2022 three-team trade: Contreras went from Atlanta to Milwaukee and Murphy from Oakland to Atlanta. Using Baseball Savant data, I charted how well catchers did when challenging pitch calls with the automated ball-strike system in 2026. Contreras, headed to the World Series, made a league-high 185 challenges, good for 1.9 runs above average, while Murphy made 55 and finished 0.3 runs below. Since the trade (2023-26 regular seasons), Contreras has played 593 games with 75 home runs and 15.4 bWAR, to Murphy's 307 games, 50 home runs and 7.9 bWAR.
